WHAT IS A VESTA CASE?
A vesta case, or simply a “vesta” is a small box made to hold matches. The first successful friction match appeared around 1832 when William Newton patented his "wax vesta" match in England. Newton named his matches after Vesta, the Roman goddess of fire. Small containers to hold this new friction match were introduced. In England these containers took their name from Newton’s invention, and were called “vesta cases", "vesta boxes" or "vestas". In America the more popular term "match safe" was used.

The locket or case hangs on a new heavy Sterling Silver Rolo chain that has a filigree clasp. It is 24” long (matinee length) and could also fit over the head rather than using the clasp due to its longer length.
