Description:
Lovely Victorian 9K gold oval mourning locket that is circa late 1800s to the early 1900s on a new 10K yellow gold twisted rope chain that is 16” long.
The front of this small oval Mourning locket has a cross that is raised and in the very center. There is a wider outline of this cross that is a halo around the larger central cross. The raised or tiered front decoration is set upon a textured chased background.
The back of this oval locket is an ornate etched design. The elements of this design include a central shield shaped cartouche, with a crown of thorns around the central shape. These designs are both etched and chased.
What is a "mourning locket"? Mourning lockets and other jewelry items were worn in the Victorian era after the Queen’s of England’s husband, Prince Albert, died. Queen Victoria went into an extended period of mourning. During this time, she wore a special locket dedicated to the memory of her husband. This became a fashionable thing to do for the upper class. As time went on, jewelry companies produced more affordable items so that the upper and middle classes could also wear Mourning jewelry. Queen Victoria of England ruled from 1837 until her death in 1901.
This oval locket measures about 1” long (including the bale) x 3/4” wide and is about 1/4” deep.
There are two oval wells inside the locket that are for the display of two photos. Currently one side has a tan textured backing and ornate frame while the other side is empty.
The locket has a hinge on the one side and opens up on the other side. It is a form locket - the one side simply fits into the other when closed. It closes securely.
The new 10K gold rope chain has a lobster clasp that opens and closes securely.

Condition:
In nice antique condition with wear and patina on both sides as would be expected a piece that is from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. There is a slight depression in the center of the cross. See photos for detail.

While vintage and antique jewelry items have endured the test of time, we offer recommendations so that they continue to give you years of wear. We advise removing jewelry for washing hands, dishes, sports, before sleeping and during vigorous activity as they may be damaged. Wash your jewelry with warm water, mild, detergent-free soap, and a soft toothbrush.
The jewelry pieces in our shop are vintage or antique pieces. We do not sell modern day (new) reproductions. As such, all of our jewelry is used and has been worn and enjoyed prior to your purchase. We try very best to accurately describe the condition of each piece and show the condition in our photos.
We accept returns and refund on items only if the item is in the same condition it was when it was sent to the customer. If you choose to alter/change/modify an item, it is not eligible for a return or refund.
We gladly accept returns for a full refund. However, when more than 4 returns from the same shipping address are requested within a 2 month period, we cannot accept a new order. It will be cancelled and fully refunded.
