Description:
Lovely Victorian oval mourning locket that is circa late 1800s to the early 1900s. This antique brass pendant locket hangs from a 14K gold filled rope chain that that is 21“ in length. In the very center of this oval locket is another oval design with textured pieces inside it creating a free-form design in the center. The inner frame of this design has a raised edge, and the outer frame of this inner oval has a scalloped rope and dot border. The designs around it really make the textured center stand out - very unique.
The back of this antique mourning locket is plain with no design.
What is a "mourning locket"? Mourning lockets and other jewelry items were worn in the Victorian era after the Queen’s of England’s husband, Prince Albert, died. Queen Victoria went into an extended period of mourning. During this time, she wore a special locket dedicated to the memory of her husband. This became a fashionable thing to do for the upper class. As time went on, jewelry companies produced more affordable items so that the upper and middle classes could also wear Mourning jewelry. Queen Victoria of England ruled from 1837 until her death in 1901.
This vintage locket is thicker (deeper) than most and has more of an “egg” shape than most lockets. This larger sized oval locket measures about 1 3/4" long (including the bale) x 3/4” wide and is about 1/3” deep.
There are two wells inside the locket that are for the display of two photos. They both have the frames and covers still intact.
The locket has a hinge on the left side and two small round pegs (one on each side) that are used to open it. It opens up on the right side.
The newer 21” long chain has a spring ring clasp that opens and closes securely.

Condition:
In fair antique condition with surface pitting and wear on both sides as would be expected a brass item that is from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. The back side of the locket, being plain, shows more wear / pitting. The newer gold filled chain is in nice vintage condition. See photos for detail.

While vintage and antique jewelry items have endured the test of time, we offer recommendations so that they continue to give you years of wear. We advise removing jewelry for washing hands, dishes, sports, before sleeping and during vigorous activity as they may be damaged. Wash your jewelry with warm water, mild, detergent-free soap, and a soft toothbrush.
The jewelry pieces in our shop are vintage or antique pieces. We do not sell modern day (new) reproductions. As such, all of our jewelry is used and has been worn and enjoyed prior to your purchase. We try very best to accurately describe the condition of each piece and show the condition in our photos.
We accept returns and refund on items only if the item is in the same condition it was when it was sent to the customer. If you choose to alter/change/modify an item, it is not eligible for a return or refund.
We gladly accept returns for a full refund. However, when more than 4 returns from the same shipping address are requested within a 2 month period, we cannot accept a new order. It will be cancelled and fully refunded.
